Country-house
A historic country house in the Zurich Unterland, reimagined with craftsmanship, personality and quiet grandeur
Finalist – SBID International Design Awards 2026 Ultra-Luxury Residential Property
A historic country house dating from 1860 in the Zurich Unterland was carefully yet fundamentally reimagined over the course of three years. Behind its listed half-timbered façade, a private home of approximately 700 m² was created, combining historic character with contemporary standards of living.
The people who live here were the starting point for the design. Memories, travels, personal objects and individual ideas were translated into a holistic interior design concept. Bespoke elements, carefully selected materials, textiles and lighting connect the different rooms and levels into a cohesive and natural whole.
The result is not an interior shaped by trends, but a home with character, warmth and a sense of quiet grandeur, expressed through atmosphere, proportion and detail.
Entrance
A warm welcome! A bright, inviting entrance opens up behind the heavy chestnut wood panels of the front door. The vertically laid checkerboard pattern of the marble flooring lends depth to the entrance area, while the high ceiling and the radiant white of the paneling lend airy lightness. Cleverly placed light sources set warm accents in the chalky white tone of the walls and combine with the soft, rich brown of the door and the discreet opulence of the sofa and table to create a friendly welcome.
Dining room
Although the interior structures that have evolved over the centuries have been completely changed, the history of the building has been preserved and made tangible as a design element. The choice of textiles and the shapes of the furniture give the somewhat cramped space a flowing dynamic and open it up to the adjoining rooms.
Kitchen
The love of the culinary arts and the pleasure that begins with the creation of a menu finds its inspiring home in this exclusive country house kitchen. The unique, custom-made kitchen made of solid wood and natural stone down to the smallest detail is wonderfully enhanced by the custom-made, hand-painted tiles above the La Cornue stove.
Master Suite
The two smaller bedrooms with separate gallery floors were opened up and connected to the adjoining bathroom. The magnificent view of the rolling hills, meadows and horse pastures from the French balcony inspired the detailed design of the rooms. Combining timeless elegance and nostalgic flair with a relaxed, personal style, the rooms are kept in neutral colors and the ambiance is characterized by clean chic with luxurious understatement. Individual, custom-made interior elements provide striking accents. For example, the neo-baroque fireplace in the sleeping area. Or the spacious shower, whose walls and floor have been designed with an artistic Sicis mosaic made of marble - a reminiscence of classic craftsmanship.
